Long Weekend Weddings… Yay or Nay?

Long Weekend Weddings… Yay or Nay?

Long weekends are considered precious to some people, especially in Canada. With only four long weekends available to us in the spring/summer months, it can be tough to decide if you should plan your wedding on one of them.

If you are wedding planning and still trying to nail down a date, here are some things to consider when looking at long weekend weddings.

The Good

The obvious positive here is that you have an extra day! You can use this extra day to recover from the big event or plan a second day of events, such as for gift opening.

If you have a lot of out-of-town guests, they may appreciate the extra travel day.

Sometimes venues will lower their costs for an event on a Sunday which may be an attractive feature to the budget-friendly wedding planners.

You can create a “local destination” themed wedding and take advantage of the local attractions for your wedding weekend and provide an entertaining weekend for your guests.

The Bad

If you do have out-of-town guests, accommodations can be expensive during long weekends. Also, if your guests are driving, traffic can be heavy on long weekends. Airports also tend to be busier on long weekends.

You are monopolizing a day, usually smack middle of your guests’ long weekend plans. If guests usually go camping or another activity on a long weekend, having a wedding on a Saturday or Sunday puts a wrench into their plans.

Some vendors charge prime date fees on long weekends, especially on Saturdays, which can make for an expensive day when taking into account all of the vendors you are using for your long weekend wedding.

Your Wedding

It’s hard to please everyone, and quite honestly, you never will. If you have your heart set on a specific venue or always knew you wanted a Canada Day themed wedding, go for it! At the end of the day, the wedding is about you, the couple, and you have to do what makes your day the most memorable. And let’s be real – who is going to forget their anniversary date of July 1st?
